Creatine is an intermediate compound of energy metabolism synthesized from L-arginine, glycine and L-methionine. It is produced by the liver and is used at the muscle level to regenerate ATP (adenosine triphosphate) during the first seconds of muscle contraction. Its function is therefore to maintain the cellular energy reserves of skeletal muscle, where it is stored both in free and phosphorylated form.

Creatine increases physical performance in repetitive, high-intensity, short-duration activities. The beneficial effect is obtained with a minimum daily intake of 3 g of creatine.
