Tapping a Wallet at a Vending Machine? Use One Card at a Time
When paying at a vending machine, take the card you intend to use out of your wallet and present that card on its own. Holding several contactless cards against a reader makes the intended payment method unclear. Follow the machine’s displayed sequence and wait for its response before trying again.

Keep the other cards away
A wallet may contain several payment cards as well as an access pass. Choose the intended bank card and keep the wallet away from the payment target. If a bank card sits inside a phone case, think about which item you are presenting when you approach the reader.
Transport for London warns customers about card clash and advises separating cards at its readers. That is a useful illustration of the multiple-card problem, not a description of vending-machine charges or a claim that all readers respond identically.
Follow the sequence shown
Some installations ask you to select first; others begin with payment authorisation. Read the instructions on the machine you are using rather than copying the sequence from another location. Present the chosen card to the indicated target and allow the reader to respond.
If you prefer a phone wallet, choose the intended payment card in that wallet and follow the device’s own payment instructions. Do not alternate rapidly between a phone and several physical cards when the result of the first attempt is still unclear.
Check what actually happened
Look for the machine’s confirmation and whether the product was delivered. If it reports a failure, note the exact message. A bank notification on its own does not explain whether the machine completed the vend, and a pending entry is different from a confirmed final charge.
Our pending-card-charge guide explains that distinction. If the machine stays unavailable for everyone, tell the operator about the equipment message rather than assuming each customer has a card problem.
Report an unresolved purchase clearly
Send the operator the location, machine reference, time, amount and selected item. Explain which payment method you used and whether you received anything. Use the operator’s official support route; never send a PIN, security code or photograph showing a full card number.
If a single card is still declined, follow the card-decline checks rather than repeatedly tapping the same way. Contact our team for help identifying the appropriate vending service contact at your site.
