Refilling an Upstairs Vending Machine: Plan the Trolley Route

Spread the love

The route that worked when a vending machine was installed may not be the route used for regular stock deliveries. For upstairs locations, review how people will move snack and drink cases from the vehicle to the machine during ordinary refill visits.

Walk the whole refill route

Start at the permitted unloading point and follow the route to the machine. Note doors, thresholds, turns, ramps and lift access. Check the route during the proposed delivery hours, when other activities may occupy the corridor. Do not rely on an installation photograph taken when the building was empty or temporary doors were removed.

Confirm the lift arrangements

Ask facilities staff which lift is approved for the task, whether booking is required and which operating restrictions apply. The site’s competent staff should confirm suitability for the intended trolley and load. Do not improvise load limits or wedge doors open. Include a contact for lift faults and a plan for postponing or rearranging the visit if access is unavailable.

Assess handling rather than relying on effort

Heavy cases and awkward routes require appropriate planning. HSA’s risk-assessment guidance concerns the actual work activity, so the site and operator should assess their own handling arrangements. Do not assume that carrying stock up stairs is an acceptable substitute when a lift is out of service. Use trained staff and suitable equipment under the agreed procedure.

Keep the route usable after opening

Furniture, stored cartons and temporary maintenance can change access. Ask the refill worker to report new obstacles and record whether they prevented safe completion. Assign someone to review repeated problems. A practical route plan should tell the worker where to go, what arrangements are confirmed and what to do when conditions differ from the plan.
