Can Customers Reach the Vending Collection Opening? Test the Full Journey
A customer may be able to read the display and make a payment but still struggle to collect the product. Assess the entire vending journey at the proposed location, including the collection opening and the space in front of it.
Start with the approach
Check whether a person can reach the machine without moving bins, chairs or a stock trolley. Observe the actual route, floor conditions and space available. Ireland’s Centre for Excellence in Universal Design includes vending-machine access and control reach in its facilities guidance. Use that guidance alongside a competent site assessment; this article is not a compliance certificate.
Include people who will use the service
Invite willing users with different access needs to give feedback without asking them to demonstrate an unsafe or uncomfortable movement. Explain the purpose and let them stop at any point. Do not assume one wheelchair user represents all users. Record practical barriers, such as difficulty approaching closely or reaching a particular control, rather than judging the person’s ability.
Test selection through collection
Observe reading the product information, choosing an item, using the payment method and retrieving the purchase. Check whether collection requires an awkward reach, grip or simultaneous action. Use the actual machine configuration where possible. A catalogue dimension alone does not describe the experience once the cabinet is surrounded by furniture and signs.
Agree changes and retest
Ask the supplier and facilities team what adjustments are appropriate. Do not modify guards, collection mechanisms or cabinet height without approval. Where independent use remains difficult, agree a clear assistance arrangement while investigating a better solution. After changes, repeat the full journey and record remaining limitations. Keep the approach space clear during day-to-day operation, not only for the assessment.
