Vending Machine Product Testing: Check Packs Before Stocking

Vending machine product testing helps you introduce a new line without creating avoidable failed vends. A product can look right on a shelf yet behave differently inside a machine. Test the actual pack, in the intended selection, before ordering enough stock for a full rollout.

This guide focuses on physical pack fit and dispensing. For assessing customer demand, see our separate article on testing new products with customers.

Prepare for vending machine product testing

First, obtain samples of the exact size and packaging you intend to buy. Record the supplier reference, pack dimensions and unit barcode where available. A different bag shape or bottle design may need a different setup, even when the product name stays the same.

Check storage instructions and confirm that the proposed equipment suits the product. For any technical adjustments, follow the manufacturer’s guidance and use trained personnel. Do not modify a mechanism simply to force a pack through it.

Check fit and visibility

Next, place the sample in the intended position using the correct loading method. Check spacing, orientation and clearance around nearby products. Ask whether the setup remains suitable as the selection empties.

Also look from the customer’s side. Can someone identify the product and its price? Does the visible pack match the selection label? Clear presentation reduces mistakes that can otherwise look like a machine fault.

Test more than one vend

Run a repeatable test with the person responsible for setup. Include normal loading levels and the final few products in a selection. Record the result rather than relying on memory.

  • Selection code and product reference.
  • Pack orientation and loading quantity.
  • Number of test attempts and successful deliveries.
  • Any jams, damaged packs or double deliveries.
  • Adjustment made and repeat-test result.

For example, one successful delivery does not establish a reliable setup if later packs catch. If a test fails, stop the rollout, correct the cause and test again. Your supplier can help decide whether a different selection or product format is more appropriate.

Confirm usable capacity

Count how many units fit correctly without compression or obstruction. This usable capacity matters more than a rough visual estimate. Then compare it with expected demand between refill visits.

If a popular product needs frequent attention, consider reallocating space rather than overloading the selection. Our existing guide to product placement provides related reading on organising the range.

Keep a vending machine product testing record

Finally, save a photograph of the approved loading arrangement and a short test record. Share it with refill staff so the setup is repeated consistently. Recheck the product when the manufacturer changes packaging or the supplier substitutes a different size.
